For »Teqsi muyu marq’ay – Eine warme Umarmung für die Erde« the teens group (14+) of Sasha Waltz & Guests’ Children’s Dance Company delved deep into the topic of climate change and our modern society’s relationship to nature and earth. During the first part of the piece, the dancers perform in the middle of the audience, inviting it to reflect on the effects of climate change on individuals. In order to feel this reality and bring it to us, the young dancers put themselves in the lives of those already affected and wrote texts about them. In the second part the group demonstrate a possible common life with all humans and living beings on earth. Together with Luz Zenaida Hualpa Garcia, dancer and choreographer from Peru, the teens learned a traditional Quechua dance which merged into organic movements of contemporary dance. Combining nativeness and modernity offers the opportunity to escape the vicious cycle of our current understanding of progress and development, to create something completely new and to find solutions for a common future. »Teqsi muyu marq’ay—A warm embrace for the Earth« is a passionate, urgent appeal for a gentler humanity, for reliable integrity and a comprehensive love of nature and all living beings. The piece from 2018 is more relevant today than ever.
Since 2007, the children's dance company offers children a possibility to develop their own dance skills. Today, it consists of four different groups (ages 6 to 8, 8 to 10, 11 to 14 and 14+). In regular training sessions under the guidance of Davide Camplani, Gabriel Galindez Cruz and other experienced dancers of the company Sasha Waltz & Guests, the children and teenagers explore their own repertoire in physical movement as well as the interaction with one another in dance. In addition, they are offered intensive workshops with guest trainers and exchange with other groups of young dancers. The groups are encouraged to regularly develop and present their own stage pieces in showing events, giving them further training in acting on stage and interacting with an audience. The creations are very diverse, based on games, improvisations, children books stories, everyday life or abstract themes as well as current issues like climate change and climate justice.
