In addition to performances in Berlin, throughout Germany, and abroad, Sasha Waltz & Guests has an active knowledge transfer program in the fields of education and community. The Berlin-based dance company is especially interested in collaborating with the local dance scene, developing sustainable international collaborations in intercultural contexts and in the countries that the dancers who have been working in Berlin for years originally came from.
Initiated by the dancer Zaratiana Randrianantenaina, an artistic exchange between Sasha Waltz & Guests, dancers, and self-organized dance structures in Madagascar took off in 2019 and continues to this day. After the first workshops on site, the “Dance Tutorials: Continu & Matsukaze” were created in 2020 in order to be able to continue and deepen the dialogue about Sasha Waltz’s choreographic work online due to the pandemic. In three short videos, Zaratiana Randrianantenaina and Orlando Rodriguez dance and explain their solos from the choreographies “Continu” (2010) and “Matsukaze” (2011, available in this media library)—both also give many instructions in the texts onscreen, which offer insights into the intentions, feelings, bodily tensions and worlds of movement when dancing a piece by Sasha Waltz. The artistic goal was to learn a solo, then reinterpret it and film it at a location of one’s choice.
For the first time, these tutorials here on AVA VOEBB make Sasha Waltz's movement material accessible to the Berlin audience—enjoy discovering and trying it out!
