As an emigrant to the United States, Charlie meets two other wannabes on the ship, Edna and her mother. Together, they escape the pickpockets who plague these ships. When they arrive in town, Charlie is starving and goes into a restaurant without a penny in his pocket. Coincidentally, he finds Edna there, also penniless, but also Goliath, now a waiter, who does not tolerate deadbeats. How can he get by?
